It has recently occurred to me that the acronym lol has the power to make whatever you say, no matter how cruel it may be, ok. I'll give you an example, saying "I'm gonna freaking kill you" can be taken as a rather violent text message that, depending on who you send it to, has some potential to get you in a bit of trouble. However, by adding lol to either beginning or end of said phrase changes it from a potentially violent comment into a jest between friends with virtually no adverse effects. It's a strange phenomena in our current cultural society where three basically meaningless letters (let's face it, who really is 'laughing out loud' when they text lol?) have the power to make almost whatever we say a-ok. But the more I think about it the more I realize adding lol to the end of anything should in actuality make whatever you just said not ok, but even MORE offensive. Here's another example, one of your so-called "friends" calls your respective "momma" either fat, dumb, or ugly in one the painfully overused "yo momma" jokes and puts lol at the end of it, which, as an already established fact should make it ok. But, if you really look at what was just said there, your so-called "friend" just called your mother fat/dumb/ugly and is now laughing about it. That's right he's (or she, I don't judge) has just insulted the woman who has given you life and is now laughing about it. Now you're not gonna let him off easy are you? Of course not! This obviously incurs you to reply with "I'm gonna freaking kill you" with no lol present to try and lessen it's impact. Now depending on your friends age, living arrangments, or maturity level (or a combination of the three) is going to spurn him to go and tell his "momma", which will then in turn make you tell your "momma" what your "friend" said which would spark a family feud that ends with the cops and everyone doing time in one way or another. All this, just because your choice of friends aren't smart enough to use the more appropriate acronym jk (just kidding for those of you who live in a cave) instead of the cruel and unusual torture machine that is lol.
